Contemporary & Traditional Tibetan Calligraphy

Title:
Chenrehzig Eyes

Japanese Sumi-ink, pure gold leaf on heavy watercolour paper. 57x76 cm. 2018

Avalokiteśvara is known in Tibetan as Chenrehzig - སྤྱན་རས་གཟིག། which directly translates as continually gazing eyes, referring to the Bodhisattva’s unceasing care and compassion for all.

The eyes in this piece, gilded in pure gold leaf, have been based on the traditional grid proportion of Buddha images, such as in thangkas or murals on temple walls. Below which is the mantra of Chenrehzig: Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ calligraphed in the classical Uchen script.
