Black on Black Tibetan Calligraphy
Homage to Mahakala
Layered black ink, gilded gold leaf, 57 x 76 cm, 2007
Mahakala is a protector of the Dharma, a wrathful manifestation of the Buddha, practiced as a deity to over-come inner and outer obstacles and to transform anger into compassion. He has three bulging eyes representing an all seeing past, present and future.
Teeth like letters spell out ‘The Great Black One’ in a stylised Uchen script, while prayers of invocation surround and cover the face.
